For the first time in history, the Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje is hosting the Museum of Contemporary Art MOMus from Thessaloniki, the neighboring Republic of Greece.
Thus, a large exhibition under the title Am I That Name or That Image? will be open to presenting the Thessaloniki Museum of Contemporary Arts to the Macedonian audience with a portion of their collection.
The exhibition presents the works of 16 artists, including Fillipo Berta, James Bridle, Fenia Kotsopoulou, Kuriaki Goni, Vladan Jeremic and Rena Radle, Majida Khttari, Marianna Ignataki, Oleg Mavrommati and Boryana Rossa, Virginia Mastrogiannaki, Eleni Mylonas, Natasha Papadopoulou, Marilou Poncin, Vivy Tsioga, Ira Valdron, Evangelia Basdekis, Alexandros Plomaritis…
“We are excited that we were able to establish close relations with the Museum in Thessaloniki and that we may produce significant projects with joined forces. Our geographic proximity to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki is a potential that we must make use of. We live in a region that suffered and continues to suffer the consequences of nationalism and transition and turbulent social and political changes. Cooperation brings us closer, and the common solutions found and the new and effective models of cooperation we came up with are also reflected in the program activities of both museums, as well as in the possibility of new institutional bilateral cooperation in future,” Mira Gacina, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, stated.
SyragoTsiara, Curator of the exhibition Am I That Name or That Image?, which is soon to be open at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, says: “The artists participating in the exhibition provide their critical comments on the naive certainty of the underlying distinction between existence and its invention, between realistic representation and counterfeiting. The “reality” of human interaction is disturbed and set-up afresh, in accordance with the image, the mask and the ideal model that we construct for ourselves. That is why the visual representations of the self utilize to such a large extent digital mediums such as photography, the internet, video, and projection.
The opening of the exhibition in Skopje was attended by: Syrago Tsiara, curator of the exhibition and acting director of MOMus-Experimental center for the Arts and acting director of MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art-Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and State Museum of Contemporary Art collections; Domna Gounari and Eirini Papakonstantinou, assistant curators; Andreas Takis, the president of the Board of Administration of MOMus; and Maria Tsantsanoglou, acting director of MOMus and director of MOMus-Museum of Modern Art-Costakis collection.
Part of the main program, includes a series of performances by the artists Tomas Diafas, Alexandros Plomaritis and the band I Broke the Vase – Eva Matsigkou and Nefeli Sani that are presenting a programme of their live performances exclusively on Saturday, 28. September, 2019.
